Grading

Raw vs. Graded

Not every card should be graded. The decision comes down to simple math: does the grading premium exceed the cost? This guide helps you calculate the ROI on grading and identifies which cards gain the most value from slabbing.

Understanding the Grading Premium

The grading premium is the price difference between a raw card and its graded equivalent. For PSA, this premium varies dramatically by card and grade. A PSA 10 premium (PSA 10 price divided by raw near-mint price) typically ranges from 2-20x for vintage cards and 1.5-5x for modern chase cards. For example, a Base Set Charizard worth $250 raw sells for approximately $3,000-4,000 in PSA 10 — a 12-16x premium. A modern Umbreon VMAX alt art worth $150 raw sells for approximately $400-600 in PSA 10 — a 2.5-4x premium. However, the premium drops sharply for lower grades. A PSA 9 typically adds only 1.2-2x over raw value, and PSA 7-8 can actually sell for less than a raw near-mint card because the grade publicly certifies the card is not in top condition. CGC and BGS premiums follow similar patterns but at lower multipliers — CGC 10s typically trade at 60-80% of PSA 10 prices, while BGS 9.5s trade at 50-70% of PSA 10 prices.

When Grading Makes Financial Sense

Grading makes financial sense when the expected graded value minus the grading cost exceeds the raw value by a meaningful margin. The formula is: (Probability of grade × Grade value) - Grading cost > Raw value. For a card worth $100 raw that has a 30% chance of PSA 10 ($400 value) and a 50% chance of PSA 9 ($150 value) and a 20% chance of PSA 8 ($80 value): Expected graded value = (0.3 × $400) + (0.5 × $150) + (0.2 × $80) = $201. With a $27 grading cost, the net expected value is $174, which exceeds the $100 raw value — so grading is a good bet. Cards that are strongest candidates for grading include: vintage WotC-era holos worth $50+ raw (PSA 10 premiums of 5-20x), 1st Edition and shadowless cards (high premiums at all grades), modern chase cards worth $100+ raw (PSA 10 premiums of 2-5x), and any card where the PSA 10 population is very low relative to demand. Cards that are poor candidates include: modern commons and uncommons ($0.05-0.25 raw, negligible grading premium), damaged or visibly worn cards (unlikely to grade above 7), and any card worth less than $5-10 raw where the grading cost exceeds the entire card value.

Risks and Downsides of Grading

The biggest risk in grading is receiving a lower grade than expected. A card you believe is a PSA 10 candidate might come back as a 9 or even an 8 due to centering or surface issues you did not detect. If you paid $35 for PSA Regular service and the card comes back a PSA 9 worth slightly more than raw value, you have lost money. Another risk is market timing — by the time your cards are returned (2-3 months for Economy service), market prices may have dropped. Pokemon card prices are volatile, and a card worth $200 when submitted could be worth $120 when returned. There is also the risk of damage in transit. While rare, packages do get lost or damaged, and even insured claims take months to resolve. Finally, grading locks liquidity — your card is in a slab for 2-3 months and cannot be sold during that time. The slab itself can develop scratches over time (PSA slabs are particularly prone), which can reduce the apparent condition of the card inside without affecting the grade.

The Investment Case for Graded Pokemon Cards

Graded Pokemon cards have emerged as an alternative investment vehicle over the past decade. The logic is straightforward: a PSA 10 of a rare card has a fixed population that can only decrease (as slabs are cracked or cards are lost), while demand from new collectors continuously increases. Key data points support this: the PWCC Top 500 Index of high-end collectible cards (predominantly PSA 10s) returned over 300% from 2017-2023. Individual cards have performed even better — a PSA 10 Base Set Charizard appreciated from approximately $8,000 in 2017 to over $40,000 at its 2021 peak before settling to roughly $15,000-20,000 in 2024. Graded cards also benefit from authentication — a PSA 10 guarantees authenticity in a market flooded with fakes and reprints, adding a trust premium over raw cards. However, Pokemon cards remain a speculative investment. Prices crashed 50-70% from their 2021 peak, and liquidity during downturns is limited. Only invest money you can afford to lose, focus on iconic cards with cultural significance (Charizard, Pikachu, Mew), and hold for 5+ year time horizons for the best chance of appreciation.

FAQ

Часто задаваемые вопросы

01 Does grading Pokemon cards increase their value?

Only if the card receives a high grade. A PSA 10 can multiply a card's value 2-20x. A PSA 9 adds a small premium (1.2-2x). Grades below 8 can actually decrease value compared to raw near-mint cards because the grade certifies the card is not in top condition.

02 Should I grade modern Pokemon cards?

Grade modern cards worth $50+ raw that have strong demand (Charizard, Umbreon, Pikachu alt arts). Skip modern commons and low-demand cards where the grading cost exceeds potential value increase. Modern holos often receive 9s due to factory print lines.

03 What happens if my card gets a lower grade than expected?

You still pay the full grading fee. You can request a review ($10+ additional fee per card) or crack the card out and resubmit, but the second submission carries the same risk. A PSA 9 often sells for more than the same card raw, so it may not be a total loss.

04 Are graded Pokemon cards a good investment?

PSA 10 copies of iconic vintage cards have appreciated significantly over 5+ year time horizons. However, the market is volatile — prices dropped 50-70% from 2021 peaks. Invest only what you can afford to lose, focus on culturally significant cards, and maintain a long-term horizon.
