PSA Grading
Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) is the most widely recognized grading company in the Pokemon TCG hobby. A PSA 10 can multiply a card's value 5-20x, but the process, cost, and strategy matter more than most collectors realize.
How PSA Grading Works
PSA evaluates Pokemon cards on a 1-10 scale based on four key criteria: centering (front and back alignment within 75/25 to 65/35 tolerances for a 10), corners (sharpness and wear), edges (nicks, chipping, or silvering), and surface (scratches, print lines, staining). Cards receive a single overall grade that represents the lowest sub-grade — a card with perfect centering and surface but one soft corner will receive the grade reflecting that corner. PSA uses a half-point scale (1, 1.5, 2, ... 10) with 10 being Gem Mint. The company was founded in 2000 and has graded over 100 million collectibles. PSA-graded Pokemon cards dominate the high-end market, with PSA 10 copies of vintage holos routinely selling for 10-50x their raw equivalents at auction. The gold PSA label is instantly recognizable and trusted by collectors worldwide, making it the default choice for grading high-value Pokemon cards.
PSA Grading Costs and Service Levels
PSA offers multiple service tiers with different price points and turnaround times. As of 2025, the Value tier starts at $20 per card with an estimated 65+ business day turnaround. Regular service costs $35-40 per card with a 45-50 business day turnaround. Express service runs $65-75 per card with 15-20 business day turnaround. Super Express is $100+ per card with 5-7 business day turnaround. Bulk submissions through authorized dealers can bring the cost down to $14-18 per card for Value service, but require minimum submissions of 25-100 cards. PSA also charges return shipping, insurance fees based on declared value, and a $5 handling fee per order. Cards declared over $999 require a higher service tier regardless of condition. The minimum declared value must match the service tier eligibility, so a card worth $2,000 cannot be submitted at the Value level.
PSA 10 Criteria and What Prevents a Perfect Grade
Achieving a PSA 10 is significantly harder than most collectors expect. The centering must fall within 65/35 on both front and back — even slightly off-center cards receive a 9. Corners must be perfectly sharp with no visible wear under 10x magnification. The slightest touch of whitening on a single corner will drop the grade to a 9. Edges must be free of nicks, chipping, and silvering. Surface must have no scratches, print defects, or factory lines that exceed PSA's tolerance. Many cards that look perfect to the naked eye receive a 9 due to factory print lines, slight off-centering, or micro-imperfections. Industry estimates suggest that only 15-30% of raw cards submitted to PSA receive a 10, depending on the era and set. Modern holographic cards have lower PSA 10 pop rates due to surface issues inherent in their printing process.
When to Choose PSA Over Other Grading Companies
PSA is the best choice when maximizing resale value is your primary goal. PSA 10 Pokemon cards consistently command the highest premiums at auction, with typical multipliers of 5-20x over raw near-mint copies for vintage cards and 2-5x for modern chase cards. PSA is also the industry standard for record-setting sales — the highest Pokemon card prices at auction are almost exclusively PSA 10 copies. Choose PSA for cards worth $100+ raw, especially vintage WotC-era holos, 1st Edition cards, and iconic modern chase cards. PSA's population reports are the most comprehensive in the hobby, making it easy to research scarcity. However, PSA is not the best choice for every situation: CGC offers better value for lower-tier cards with their $12-18 entry point, and BGS provides sub-grades that give collectors more detail about a card's specific strengths and weaknesses.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
01 How much does PSA grading cost for Pokemon cards?
PSA grading starts at $20 per card (Value service) with 65+ business day turnaround. Regular service is $35-40, Express is $65-75, and Super Express is $100+. Bulk submissions through dealers can bring costs down to $14-18 per card.
02 What percentage of Pokemon cards get a PSA 10?
Approximately 15-30% of cards submitted receive a PSA 10, depending on the set and era. Modern holographic cards have lower PSA 10 rates due to surface print lines. Cards taken straight from packs have the highest chance, but even pack-fresh holos often receive a 9.
03 How long does PSA grading take?
PSA turnaround times vary by service level: Value service takes 65+ business days, Regular takes 45-50 business days, Express takes 15-20, and Super Express takes 5-7. These times can double during peak periods like holidays or after a major product release.
04 Is PSA grading worth it for Pokemon cards?
PSA grading is worth it when the card's raw value times the PSA 10 premium exceeds the grading cost plus fees. For vintage cards worth $50+ raw, PSA grading almost always adds value. For modern cards under $10 raw, the grading cost usually exceeds the value added unless it achieves a PSA 10 on a popular Pokemon.
