Current Standard Archetypes
Scarlet & Violet era — the ex comeback and Terastal mechanics.
Era Overview
The Current Standard format is built around Pokemon-ex (lowercase, Gen 3 style with evolved-form ex allowed) and Terastal-type Pokémon. Charizard ex (Obsidian Flames) + Pidgeot ex has anchored the meta for multiple rotations — the combination pairs Charizard's high-damage Burning Darkness with Pidgeot's Quick Search ability, giving unmatched consistency. Gardevoir ex remains a psychic pillar. Raging Bolt ex (Temporal Forces, Ancient Paradox) brought Ancient-trainer mechanics to tier 1. Dragapult ex (Twilight Masquerade) added a fast two-prize attacker with spread damage. Miraidon ex decks (Lightning Tera, from SV base) remain competitive for turn-one setup speed. The Stellar Tera mechanic (Stellar Crown, September 2024) introduced multi-type Tera Pokémon with attacks that scale based on different Energy types. The format rotates annually each fall, so deck popularity shifts as the oldest sets exit the legal pool.
