What centering means on a Pokemon card

Centering is the balance of the card artwork and border from left to right and top to bottom. A perfectly centered card has even borders on all sides. Off-center cards have one border visibly thicker than the opposite side. Grading companies evaluate front and back centering as part of the final grade, and severe centering issues can cap the grade even when corners, edges, and surface look excellent.

How to check centering before grading

Place the card on a flat surface under even lighting and compare opposite borders. On the front, check left versus right and top versus bottom. Then flip the card and repeat on the back, where centering problems are often more obvious. For a stronger check, use a centering overlay, ruler, or digital measurement tool to estimate the Pokemon card border ratio. If the border difference jumps out immediately, the card is unlikely to be a top-grade candidate.
