PROMO

Promo Cards

Distributed through special events, product bundles, and promotions, promo cards exist outside the standard set structure. Some are near-worthless pack-ins; others are among the most valuable cards ever printed.

What Is It?

Promo cards are Pokemon cards released outside of standard booster sets through special events, product bundles, tournaments, and promotions. They are identified by a black star promo symbol and use a separate numbering system (e.g., SWSH001 for Sword & Shield promos). Promo distributions include Elite Trainer Box promos, McDonald's promotions, Build & Battle kits, movie tie-ins, and tournament prizes. Each era has its own promo series with distinct numbering.

How to Identify

Look for the black star promo symbol (a star with "PROMO" text) where the set symbol would normally appear. Promo cards have their own numbering system separate from expansion sets. WotC-era promos are numbered simply (1-53). Modern promos use era prefixes like SWSH001 or SVP001. Some promos also have a stamp indicating the distribution method (e.g., "STAFF" for tournament staff cards, which carry significant premiums).

Value Range

Promo values span the entire spectrum. Standard ETB and box promos sell for $1-5. McDonald's promos range from $2-15. Tournament promos and staff cards can reach $50-500+. The most valuable promo ever is the Pikachu Illustrator, a Japanese contest prize card valued at over $5 million. English WOTC promos like Ancient Mew and the original black star series sell for $10-50 each.

Scan with Pokex

Pokex identifies promo cards by their unique numbering system and distribution marks, including the valuable "STAFF" stamp that can multiply a card's value by 5-10x. The scanner distinguishes between identical-looking promos from different distribution channels.
