Generation VIII: Dynamax & V
Generation VIII introduced Pokemon-V (Basic, two-prize) and VMAX (evolved three-prize Dynamax forms with 310-340 HP). Pokemon Sword and Shield launched November 2019, followed by DLC expansions (Isle of Armor, Crown Tundra) in 2020 and Legends: Arceus (January 2022) and Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl (November 2021). The SWSH TCG block is the largest in Pokemon history — fifteen mainline sets plus Celebrations (the 25th anniversary set), Pokemon GO (July 2022), and more. Evolving Skies (swsh7, August 2021) became one of the most in-demand modern sets due to the Eeveelution Alternate Art chase cards (Umbreon VMAX Alt Art is the era's most iconic card, frequently clearing $800-$1500 graded). VSTAR Powers (once-per-game activation) debuted in Brilliant Stars, adding a new evolved mechanic alongside VMAX. Crown Zenith closed the era with retrospective Radiant Pokemon and Gallery cards.

Frequently Asked Questions
01 Why are Evolving Skies cards so valuable?
Evolving Skies (swsh7) contains the full Eeveelution Alternate Art lineup — Umbreon VMAX Alt Art (215/203), Sylveon VMAX Alt Art, Espeon VMAX Alt Art, Glaceon VMAX Alt Art, Leafeon VMAX Alt Art — that routinely sell for $500-$1,500+ graded. Collector demand for Eevee variants has only grown since release.
02 What was the meta deck of Gen 8?
Mew VMAX (Fusion Strike engine) dominated 2022 Standard alongside Arceus VSTAR. Lugia VSTAR with Archeops acceleration became the 2023 pre-rotation juggernaut. Other pillars: ADP-Zacian (Arceus/Dialga/Palkia GX Tag Team + Zacian V), Urshifu Rapid/Single Strike VMAX, and Inteleon Toolbox.
03 Which Gen 8 starter cards are most collected?
Rillaboom VMAX, Cinderace VMAX, and Inteleon VMAX all have strong collector followings. The Alternate Art variants of each, plus the Rainbow Rare Secret finish versions, command the strongest premiums. Inteleon VMAX is especially valued for its gameplay relevance (Shady Dealings engine).
04 What makes VMAX cards so powerful?
VMAX Pokemon had massive HP (310-340) and powerful 200+ damage attacks, but gave up three Prizes on KO. The tradeoff between durability and prize cost defined the format. Single-prize attackers ("single-prize" decks) emerged as a natural counter-play archetype.
