Generation II: The Johto Journey

Generation II added 100 new Johto Pokémon with Pokemon Gold and Silver (1999 JP / 2000 NA), plus Crystal in 2001. The TCG entered its Neo era — four sets (Neo Genesis, Neo Discovery, Neo Revelation, Neo Destiny) plus Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge as the final Wizards-era releases. Neo Genesis introduced Dark and Steel types to the TCG, and Neo Destiny debuted Shining Pokemon as the first ultra-rare holofoil variants — precursors to every modern chase card. Lugia (the Neo Genesis box mascot) and Ho-Oh defined the era's iconography, while Umbreon and Espeon became enduring collector favorites. Notably, Skyridge was the final Wizards-printed English Pokemon TCG set before the 2003 transition to Nintendo (Pokemon Company International).

FAQ

Часто задаваемые вопросы

01 What makes Gen 2 cards valuable?

Shining Pokemon from Neo Destiny (Shining Charizard, Shining Mewtwo, Shining Magikarp) and the Neo Genesis Lugia hold top value. Skyridge Crystal-type Charizard and Crystal Celebi are also grails. PSA 10 copies of these routinely command four-figure prices and five figures for the Shining Charizard.

02 How does Gen 2 compare to Gen 1 in collectibility?

Gen 2 English prints were smaller than Gen 1 Base Set, so some Neo rares are actually scarcer than Gen 1 equivalents — particularly 1st Edition Neo Destiny holos and Skyridge Crystal cards. Japanese-only Gen 2 promotional cards (VS Series, e-Reader bonuses) are the scarcest of all.

03 What was the meta deck of Gen 2?

Haymaker (Hitmonchan, Electabuzz, Scyther from Gen 1) remained dominant into early Gen 2 and eventually yielded to Sneasel decks (Neo Genesis Sneasel was heavily nerfed mid-format). Slowking lock (Neo Genesis Slowking) defined the late Gen 2 metagame alongside Feraligatr + Magneton water decks.

04 Which Gen 2 starter cards are most collected?

Typhlosion from Neo Genesis holds the strongest demand, followed by Feraligatr and Meganium. The Neo Revelation Shining Gyarados and the later Neo Destiny Shining variants hold more speculative value, but Typhlosion has the most consistent collector demand of the Johto starters.
