Generation I: Where It All Began
Generation I introduced the original 151 Kanto Pokémon with Red and Blue on Game Boy in 1996 (1998 in North America), followed by Yellow in 1998. The TCG arm launched in English with Base Set in January 1999. Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur, Pikachu, and Mewtwo anchored a cultural phenomenon that shaped modern collectibles. These cards — especially 1st Edition shadowless variants — remain the most valuable in the hobby; a PSA 10 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard has sold for over $400,000, and even mid-grade copies regularly clear four figures. The Wizards of the Coast print runs (Base Set through Skyridge) are the defining vintage era, with Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Base Set 2, Team Rocket, Gym Heroes, Gym Challenge, Neo Genesis (late Gen 1/early Gen 2), and Legendary Collection all traced to this window.

Часто задаваемые вопросы
01 What are the most valuable Generation 1 cards?
First-edition shadowless Base Set Charizard (#4/102) is the most valuable, with PSA 10 copies trading for $300k+. Close behind: 1st Edition Blastoise, Venusaur, and the Base Set Trainer cards. Pristine graded 1st Edition Holos consistently sell for four to six figures.
02 How can I tell if my Gen 1 card is first edition?
Look for the "Edition 1" stamp on the bottom-left of the card art. Shadowless cards lack the dark shadow on the right side of the illustration frame — shadowless was the short first English print run before shadow printing was added. Pokex identifies both instantly via camera scan.
03 Are Gen 1 cards still being reprinted?
Yes — Celebrations (2021) reprinted iconic Gen 1 cards for the 25th anniversary, and the Classic Collection line continues this. Scarlet & Violet 151 (2023) reprinted the original Kanto 151 in modern frames with new alternate-art variants.
04 Which Gen 1 starter cards are most collected?
Base Set Charizard is the clear king, followed by Base Set Blastoise and Venusaur. Shadowless and 1st Edition versions of each command the largest premiums. Pikachu Illustrator (a trophy card, not tournament-distributed) is the all-time Gen 1 grail at eight figures.
