What Are They?

Reverse holographic (reverse holo) Pokemon cards feature a foil pattern on the card border, text box, and background while the artwork itself remains non-foil. This is the opposite of standard holo cards where only the artwork shimmers. Reverse holos were introduced in the Legendary Collection set in 2002 and have been a staple pull in booster packs since the EX Ruby & Sapphire era. In most modern sets, each booster pack contains one reverse holo card, making them more common than holo rares but still collected for their visual appeal and set completion.

How to Identify

Tilt the card under a light source. If the border, name bar, HP area, and text box shimmer with foil while the artwork remains flat and non-reflective, it is a reverse holo. The foil pattern varies by era: Legendary Collection used a unique mirror pattern, EX-era used a dotted texture, Diamond & Pearl used a parallel line pattern, and modern sets use various star or sparkle patterns. Reverse holos always have the same rarity symbol as their non-holo counterpart. Check the bottom of the card for the set symbol and number, which matches the standard version.

Value Factors

Most modern reverse holos are worth modest amounts ($0.25-2), but certain variants command significant premiums. Legendary Collection reverse holos are the most valuable, with some reaching $50-500 or more. Reverse holos of popular Pokemon like Charizard, Mewtwo, and Pikachu hold better value. Stamped reverse holos from the EX era (with the set logo stamped on the artwork) are increasingly sought after. Condition matters considerably since the large foil surface area is prone to scratching and whitening.

Scan with Pokex

Pokex correctly distinguishes between reverse holo and standard versions of the same card, pulling the exact pricing for the variant you scanned. Since reverse holos and standard prints can have very different values, this accuracy ensures you never accidentally undervalue a desirable reverse holo or overprice a common one.

Q2 Are reverse holo Pokemon cards worth anything?

Q3 Is a reverse holo rarer than a regular holo?

No. In modern sets, reverse holos appear in every booster pack (one per pack), while holo rares appear in roughly one of every three packs. This makes reverse holos more common overall, though specific reverse holo cards may still be harder to find.

Q4 Can any Pokemon card come in reverse holo?

In most modern sets, common, uncommon, and rare cards all have reverse holo versions. Ultra rares and secret rares typically do not have reverse holo variants. The exact pool of reverse-holo-eligible cards varies by set.
