BGS Grading

Beckett Grading Services (BGS) pioneered the sub-grade system that CGC later adopted. Known for their iconic Black Label — the rarest grade in the hobby — BGS remains a respected name in Pokemon card grading, particularly for collectors who value detailed condition analysis.

How BGS Grading Works

BGS grades Pokemon cards on a 1-10 scale with half-point increments and four sub-grades: Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. The overall grade equals the lowest sub-grade, identical to CGC's system. However, BGS distinguishes between three 10-level grades: BGS 10 (all sub-grades 10, centering within 65/35), BGS 10 Pristine (all sub-grades 10, centering within 60/40), and the legendary BGS Black Label (all sub-grades 10, centering within 50/50, zero flaws under magnification). Black Label is the rarest grade in all of card collecting — BGS has awarded fewer Black Labels for Pokemon cards than PSA has awarded PSA 10s for many popular cards. The Black Label holder features a distinctive black label instead of the standard gold, making it instantly recognizable. BGS was the first major grading company to offer sub-grades, establishing the system that CGC later adopted.

BGS Grading Costs and Service Levels

BGS offers several service tiers. Economy service starts at $15 per card with a 60+ business day turnaround. Standard service costs $25 per card with a 40 business day turnaround. Express service is $50 per card with a 20 business day turnaround. Premium service costs $100 per card with a 10 business day turnaround. BGS also offers a dual-grade option for $10 extra per card, which provides both an overall BGS grade and an unopened-pack grade for cards still in sealed packs. Unlike PSA, BGS does not enforce strict minimum declared values per service tier, though they recommend higher tiers for valuable cards to ensure proper insurance during processing. Return shipping and insurance are additional fees. BGS periodically runs specials and conventions where walk-up grading is available at reduced pricing. Bulk submissions through authorized BGS dealers can reduce per-card costs by 10-20%.

The BGS Black Label Phenomenon

The BGS Black Label is the holy grail of card grading — a card that receives a perfect 10 in all four sub-grades with 50/50 centering on both front and back and zero detectable flaws even under 10x magnification. The estimated rate of Black Label grades is well under 1% of all submissions, and for popular vintage Pokemon cards, Black Label population counts are often in the single digits. A BGS Black Label Base Set Charizard is one of the most valuable Pokemon cards in existence, with a value exceeding most PSA 10 specimens of the same card. The perception of Black Label as the ultimate grade has created a dedicated collector base that drives prices far beyond standard BGS 10 values. For cards where Black Labels exist, they typically sell for 3-10x the price of a standard BGS 10 and 1.5-3x the price of a PSA 10.

How BGS Compares to PSA and CGC

BGS occupies a unique position between PSA and CGC. Like CGC, BGS provides four sub-grades (Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface) that give collectors detailed condition information. Unlike PSA, BGS and CGC are seen as having stricter surface standards, which means a card that receives a PSA 10 might receive a BGS 9 or BGS 9.5 for surface issues. In terms of resale value, BGS-graded Pokemon cards generally trade at a 20-40% discount to PSA 10 equivalents for the same card, with one major exception: BGS Black Labels command a premium over all other grades. BGS holders are considered the most durable in the hobby, with a thick acrylic slab that provides excellent protection. For collectors who prioritize long-term card preservation and want sub-grade transparency, BGS is an excellent choice. For maximum resale value, PSA remains the market standard.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01 How much does BGS grading cost for Pokemon cards?

BGS grading starts at $15 per card (Economy) with 60+ business day turnaround. Standard is $25, Express is $50, and Premium is $100. Dual-grade options are available for an additional $10 per card.

02 What is a BGS Black Label?

A BGS Black Label is the highest grade possible — all four sub-grades (Centering, Corners, Edges, Surface) must be 10 with 50/50 centering and zero flaws under magnification. Fewer than 1% of submissions receive Black Label, making it the rarest grade in the hobby.

03 Is BGS or PSA better for Pokemon cards?

PSA commands higher resale premiums for most cards. BGS offers sub-grades for transparency, a more durable holder, and the prestigious Black Label designation. Choose PSA for maximum value at sale; choose BGS for personal collections where sub-grades and protection matter.

04 What are BGS sub-grades?

BGS grades four categories separately: Centering (how well the image is aligned), Corners (sharpness and condition), Edges (nicks, chipping, or wear), and Surface (scratches, print lines, staining). The overall grade equals the lowest sub-grade.
