Generation IX: Terastallize

Generation IX features the Paldea region and Terastal Pokémon — variants that change their type for battle via a crystallized crown. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet launched in November 2022, with The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk DLC in 2023. Pokemon-ex (lowercase — evolved forms allowed again, 2-prize Pokémon) replaced V/VMAX/VSTAR. Ancient and Future Paradox Pokémon debuted as set-specific mechanics (set-splitting Ancient/Future Trainer support). Scarlet & Violet 151 (June 2023) reprinted the original Kanto 151 in modern frames with Illustration Rare and Special Illustration Rare chase cards. Paldean Fates (January 2024) brought back Shiny chase cards in a Hidden Fates-style premium set. Twilight Masquerade (May 2024), Shrouded Fable, Stellar Crown, and Surging Sparks continued the era with Tera-type mechanics. The SV era also introduced Illustration Rares and Special Illustration Rares (SIRs) — full-art cards with heavily artistic compositions that have become the new premier chase category.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between ex (lowercase) and EX (uppercase)?

Lowercase ex (SV era, returning from Gen 3) can evolve — so Charizard ex is a Stage 2 card. Uppercase EX (Black & White era, Gen 5) was always Basic. Both give up two prizes. GX (Gen 7) and V (Gen 8) are other generation mechanics entirely, with different rules and two-or-three-prize costs.

02 What are Paradox Pokemon?

Paradox Pokemon are Ancient (prehistoric versions) or Future (mechanical versions) variants of existing Pokemon from Scarlet or Violet. Examples: Gouging Fire (ancient Entei), Iron Thorns (future Tyranitar), Walking Wake (ancient Suicune), Iron Leaves (future Virizion). They support Ancient or Future trainer mechanics in the TCG.

03 What is the best deck in Standard right now?

Charizard ex (Obsidian Flames) + Pidgeot ex (Obsidian Flames) has anchored Standard for multiple rotations with unmatched consistency. Gardevoir ex, Raging Bolt ex (Temporal Forces), Dragapult ex (Twilight Masquerade), and Miraidon ex decks rotate through Tier 1/2 depending on the current rotation.

04 Which Gen 9 starter cards are most collected?

Meowscarada ex, Skeledirge ex, and Quaquaval ex all have solid collector demand. The Special Illustration Rare variants of each (full-art artistic compositions in the SV era's new premier chase format) command the strongest premiums. Meowscarada ex SIR is the most sought-after of the three.
